Duchess Dress

Women’s Duchess Jacket

Ellie and Mac has released the Women’s Duchess coat and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it!

I had originally joined the kids test to make one for Samantha, but she had a growth spurt and doesn’t fit the kids size chart anymore… ?

Pfffff kids! Why do they have to grow so fast? ?

When the women’s version was announced I couldn’t jump in fast enough. Everything about this pattern is so pretty!

I bought fabric to make a winter coat, but when I started assembling the pattern the project took a life of its own and I grabbed this lighter weight fabric, made some mods, and the Duchess dress was born! ?

I really really love the way it turned out!

This is how I adapted the pattern:

  • Eliminated the collar;
  • Lined the bodice only;
  • Trimmed the back skirt a bit to have a less dramatic high-low:
  • I didn’t size down, but used a 3/8″ seam allowance instead of 1/4″.

That’s it!

After the “coat” was done, I overlapped it, sewed it shut and added the buttons as decoration.

The fabric I used is a bit of a mystery… I ordered it online and it’s called “Jersey Lace Relief” and fiber content is poly, viscose, and elastane, but it has less than 5% stretch horizontally and none vertically, it’s like a net on top of some mesh. ??‍♀

Now that I got this hacked version out of my system (sometime you just have to follow your vision! ☺), I’ll get right on my winter coat!

I think what’s getting to me is that I got black fabric, and after seeing all the amazing coats the testers made, I’m feeling uninspired by my boring fabric… Has that ever happened to you?

Meanwhile I’m thinking I want another dress in red… ?

    Did you add a zipper to get it on and off, or are the top buttons still functional? Keen to do this for an autumn work dress.

    1. Anneke, my fabric has a tiny bit of stretch and since the dress doesn’t have negative ease, it’s just enough so I can pull it on and off without closures. 😉
