Sometimes it’s good to go back to basics
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve sewn a ‘simple’ t-shirt for myself.
I’ve been missing some basic-but-cute tops in my wardrobe… those were the items that it just felt easier and, let’s be honest, cheaper to buy.
But the thing is… I’m spoiled by custom fit by now. RTW just never fits right. I have a 3 to 4 size difference between bust and hips and it’s nearly impossible to get a well-fitting top just off the rack.
Not to mention, that it’s nice to have an easy and fast sew in between more complicated projects. It’s like cleansing the palate. 😉
This was my first time making a Reagan Raglan from Bella Sunshine Designs and it did not disappoint. Not that I expected anything else… BSD has great drafting and I love their patterns.
The Reagan has plenty of options to choose from before we start sewing.
- 3 lengths – Top, Tunic or Dress;
- Short or Long Sleeves;
- Scoop or V- neck

I chose to make a top length with scoop neck and short sleeves, and because I can’t resist my hacking ways… I modified it a bit. 😀
I shorted the top to hit at high hip instead of hip, rounded the hems and cut the back in two mirrored pieces instead of in the fold so I could shape it to have it more fitted so I could wear it tucked it as well.
I managed to squeeze it out of my last pieces of this plaid jersey that I love. I did have to get a bit creative with cutting and play a bit of fabric Tetris tough. The back isn’t as matchy and aligned as I’d like, but I can live with that.
I really like the end result and will be making more of these for sure. They’re so quick to whip up and a great way to use up the bigger scraps.

Hij is super leuk! Ik moet bekennen dat de Reagan al bijna een jaar uitgeprint en al klaar ligt om eens gemaakt te worden hier… Volgens mij moet ik dat nu toch maar eens gaan doen…

Can you tell me if you altered armholes at all? Other pics I see of this top are bunched up in armpit area and yours looks perfect!

I didn’t modify the armholes at all.
I just followed the size chart and did the mods to the back panel and hem that I mentioned on the post. 😉
(To achieve the best fit it’s important to take both upper bust and full bust into consideration and grade/adjust accordingly.)
