The Sum It Up Bra!

Sum It Up Bra Bundle – George + Ginger

Eek! Kristi just released another amazing bra pattern series!

Just like the Switch It Up, the Sum It Up consists of two patterns:

Just as before, I’m pretty sure this will be a proeminent question on everyone’s minds, so I’ll copy and past from my previous post πŸ˜‰ :

“Is it possible to mix and match the front and back options?”

Here’s a quote from Kristi:

“You can if you work out the construction. I wasn’t able to get that to work with every single option without exposed or unfinished seams, so I did it this way. Some fronts work better with some backs than others do. It’s definitely a personal hack situation.”

Well, you know I just had to have a little fun, mix and match and make them all πŸ˜‰
A lot of them worked out perfectly, but some needed a little fiddling and some have exposed seams on the inside.

So, let’s get the a party started, shall we? πŸ˜€

Sum It Up Bra Front Edition

“The Sum It Up Bra Front Edition is an all-in-one design that’s perfect for mixing and matching your favorite styles!  One basic, full coverage back with TEN different front options–all interchangeable and ready to be customized just for you!”

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, right?
So I’ll just leave you with these then πŸ˜‰

Aren’t they fabulous? Can’t pick a favorite!

SUM IT UP BRA – BACK EDITION

“The Sum It Up Bra Back Edition is an all-in-one design that’s perfect for mixing and matching your favorite styles!  One basic, front with TEN different back options–all interchangeable and ready to be customized just for you!”

There you go, another picture overload!

My thoughts are pretty much the same as previously:

  • It’s an amazing pattern and together with the Switch it Up they are all you will every need from Sports Bras patterns!
  • It’s an amazing scrap buster
  • They’re lined and you could easily add a third layer of powermesh for extra support;
  • There are instructions to add elastic to the straps and bands;
  • I used FOE instead of binding in a lot of them;
  • I used a mixture of different fabrics like, athletic knits, lycra, cotton lycra, mesh… as long as the fabric has enough stretch, you’ll be fine.
  • Front View 5 and Back View 12 are the only ones sewn per pattern, all the rest is mixed and matched.

This is it for now!

I’ll come back to this post and add the front and back pairing collages with some observations on each, but still need to make those and am too excited to share these with y’all!

SUM IT UP BUNDLE – my suggestion. If you get only the front or only the back you’ll probably end up wanting the other one as well, and this way you get extra value for the money πŸ˜‰

ETA: MIX AND MATCHING

Ok, let’s do this! πŸ˜‰
Here are the pairings I’ve done:

VIEWS 1 + 18

This was a pretty straightforward mash.

I do have an exposed seam on the inside of the shoulder because it was the easiest way. But if that’s a deal-breaker for you, there are a couple of ways to avoid it. One of them would be to bind the back as well and tacking the straps to the back bodice as the last step.

Deets:

  • Range 10 B cup
  • Main: Polyknit;
  • Lining: Athletic Knit
  • FOE for the straps and binding
  • Wide elastic as waistband

VIEWS 2 + 15

Another straightforward mash.
On the photo it looks like there’s only 1 elastic going through on view 15, but there are two, as per pattern.

If you want to make the mash even more seamless, you can use binding of the same width for both the front and back, and cut the 2 front straps and top 2 back straps as one continuous piece. For that, just add the lengths and subtract the seam allowance.

Deets:

  • Range 10 – B cup
  • Main fabric: custom ribbed knit from 7byRaz;
  • Lining: athletic knit;
  • used FOE for all straps;
  • Waistband: athletic knit

VIEWS 3 + 14

This one needed a bit of fiddling with the straps in order to work.

I cut the longer front strap and the straps that for the x on the back as one piece and attached the other back straps to those.

It looks a bit wonky on the photo but it’s because the straight across strap in the middle got caught and I only noticed it after the photos were done.

Deets:

  • Range 10 – B cup
  • Main fabric: jersey pique
  • lining fabric: jersey pique
  • FOE for the straps

VIEW 4 +13

This one worked together like a charm!
All seams are enclosed. The main mod on this one is that I used the burito method to finish the armscye instead of using binding.

Deets:

  • Range 10 – B cup
  • Main fabric: cotton lycra
  • Lining: cotton lycra
  • rolled elastic for straps

VIEW 5 – as per pattern

This one was made as per pattern, no mods.

Deets:

  • Range 10 – B cup
  • Main fabric: knit mesh
  • Lining: athletic knit
  • strap binding: cotton lycra

VIEW 6 + 17

This one works together perfectly as well.
I calculated the lenght of bindings in order to cut front and back as one.

  • Rage 10 – B cup
  • main: stretch lace
  • lining: cotton lycra
  • binding and straps: FOE
  • band: cotton lycra

VIEW 7 +16

I absolutely love this one!
It also needed a little fiddling with the straps width on the back bodice. When I paired these two I forgot to account for that. But it’s simple to narrow that strap a bit in order to make it match the front one.

Another thing to note on this one is that both my fabrics were lightweight, that’s what caused the scalopping of the front center edges. If you use stronger fabrics that line will be neat and straight. πŸ˜‰

Deets:

  • Range 10 – B cup
  • main fabri: mesh
  • lining: swim
  • band: athletic knit
  • strap and binding: FOE

VIEW 8 + 19

Another perfect match!
This pair can easily be made with all enclosed seams. I do have an exposed one at the shoulder, but it’s because I opted to have the back straps as a single layer.

  • Range 10 – B cup
  • main: knitted jersey
  • lining: athletic knit
  • waistband: ribbing
  • front straps: wide elastic
  • back straps athletic knit

VIEW 9 + 20

Another pair made for each other, just a matter of cutting front and back (armscye and neckline) binding as one.

  • Range 10 – B cup
  • Main: swim
  • Lining: swim
  • binding: FOE
  • band: swim

VIEW 10 + 11

This one pairs perfectly as well.

The back straps look like have different widths, but that was just me not adjusting it properly after putting it on.

  • range 10 – B cup
  • everything is made with athletic knit and it’s the most comfortable of them all.

VIEW 12 + basic front

This one is also done as per pattern, no mods whatsoever.

  • Range 10 – B cup
  • main: striped mesh
  • lining: poly skin colored lining
  • band, knots and binding is athletic knit

BONUS: fit/muslin sews

These were my first fit sews. Perfect pattern from the get-go! <3

That’s it for now!
I know I was super short and brief, but if you need more info or some help, feel free to send me a message!

Here’s the link party again, in case you haven’t grabbed the patterns yet and want to check them out πŸ˜‰
